The Ultimate Guide to Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy: What’s (Actually) Worth the Suitcase Space?

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

One of my favorite stops in Florence, Italy, is Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Often referred to as the oldest apothecary in the world, it's a can't-miss for anyone who loves beautiful, high-quality Italian fragrances and skincare.

Founded by Dominican monks in 1221 and open to the public since 1612, this monastery-turned-apothecary has served everyone from Italian nobility to modern-day shoppers. While they’ve expanded their profumeria to global cities like Paris, Tokyo, and London, nothing compares to the flagship location on Via della Scala.

In this guide, I’ll cover how to visit and which products are worth the space in your suitcase!

Visiting Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

Santa Maria Novella's flagship boutique is located at 16 Via della Scala, just a short walk from Florence’s highlights like the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery.

  • Hours: Typically open daily from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM.
  • The Experience: If you have the time, I would give yourself at least thirty to forty-five minutes to browse and take everything in. The building itself is gorgeous with frescoes, vaulted ceilings, and marble. If you love history, make sure to also visit the attached museum to see more about the early days of the apothecary (more on that below!)

Best Products at Santa Maria Novella

If you're like me, you'll want to take your time and check out each of the products and scents. If you're short on suitcase space, here are some ideas for can't-miss products to consider:

1. L’Iris Eau de Parfum

This was the first official Eau de Parfum released by the house. It’s a beautiful tribute to Florence, as the Iris is the city’s historic symbol. It’s sophisticated, powdery, and floral.

2. Acqua della Regina (The Queen’s Water)

If you want to smell like royalty, this is it. Created in 1533 for Catherine de’ Medici upon her marriage to the King of France, this citrusy, neroli-forward cologne is one of the oldest fragrances still in production.

3. Acqua di Rose (Rose Water)

Originally created in 1381 (yes, really!), this toner is incredible. It’s refreshing and makes for a luxury daily ritual that won't break the bank compared to their perfumes.

4. Pot Pourri in Silk Sachets

This isn't your average grocery store potpourri. This Tuscan blend of berries, leaves, and petals is preserved in terracotta jars.

  • Pro Tip: Buy the small silk sachets to tuck into your drawers or luggage. They are lightweight, won't break in transit, and make the perfect "I just got back from Italy" gift.

What to Skip (and Why)

While everything in the pharmacy is beautiful, not everything is travel-friendly. Here is what I’d recommend leaving on the shelf, but of course my ethos is buy what makes you happy-I once bought a whole suitcase to bring home a wheel of cheese from Italy!

  • Wax Tablets (In Summer): I love these for drawers, but be careful. Since they are made of natural beeswax, they can actually melt if your luggage gets too hot (like in a car trunk or a plane's cargo hold in July). If you’re traveling during a heatwave, skip these or carry them in your personal "under-the-seat" bag where the AC can keep them solid!
  • Multiple Heavy Glass Bottles: It is so tempting to grab three or four scents, but Santa Maria Novella uses thick, high-quality glass. One bottle is a souvenir; three may be fragile yet bulky in your suitcase and add extra weight. If you’re torn, consider a discovery set instead.
  • The Ceramic Pot Pourri Vases: Stunning, but incredibly fragile and bulky. If you love the scent, buy the refill bags or the silk sachets. You can always find a beautiful jar back home that doesn’t require bubble wrapping.

The Shopping Secret: The "Smart Card" System

One thing that surprises first-time visitors is that you won’t see people carrying shopping baskets or armfuls of products. Instead, the pharmacy uses a seamless smart card system. As you wander through the different rooms—from the herbalist's shop to the perfumery—simply tell an associate which items you’d like. They will swipe a dedicated plastic card for you and digitally "load" your selections onto it. You can keep adding items as you move through the building. Once you're finished, take your card to the grand Sala di Vendita (the main sales room) near the exit. Only then do you pay, and the staff will retrieve your items from the stockroom, beautifully boxed and bagged for you to take home.

Don’t Forget Your VAT Refund!

Since Santa Maria Novella is a luxury experience, your total can add up quickly. If you are a non-EU resident (like travelers from the US, UK, or Canada), you are eligible for a VAT (Value Added Tax) refund on purchases over a certain amount—usually around €70.01 per shop, depending on current Italian regulations.

How to do it:

  1. Bring your passport when shopping: You typically cannot start the process without it.
  2. Ask at the counter: Tell the associate you’d like a "Tax-Free form" before they ring you up. They will provide you with a specific receipt and document.
  3. Validate at the airport: When you’re leaving the EU, take that paperwork to the Customs/Tax Refund desk at the airport before you check your bags.

It’s an extra step, but it can save you roughly 11% to 15.5% off your total!

An ancient book at Santa Maria Novella museum in Florence, Italy

Visit the Santa Maria Novella Museum

How often is a trip to a beauty boutique accompanied by a stroll through a museum? Not very often, but that's part of what makes Santa Maria Novella so unique! It doesn't take more than a few minutes, but it's so fun to see the ancient texts and tools used throughout the centuries to create their herbal potions. Plus, it's free!

Whether you leave with a single silk sachet or a suitcase full of perfume, walking through those doors feels like stepping back in time. Enjoy every fragrant second of it!
